Getting started
Which devices and systems does manan support?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later, Mac with macOS 14 or later, and Apple Watch with watchOS 10 or later. The newest on-device transcription needs iOS, iPadOS or macOS 26.
Where are my notes stored?
As plain markdown (.md) files in a “manan” folder in your iCloud Drive. You can open them in Files, Finder or any other app. Voice recordings and images live in the Attachments folder inside it.
Is there an account or a subscription?
No. manan is free, has no account and no in-app purchases. Please read the privacy policy for the full picture.
iCloud and syncing
My notes aren't appearing on another device.
Sign in with the same Apple Account on both devices and make sure iCloud Drive is on and manan is allowed to use it (Settings → your name → iCloud → Drive → Apps Syncing to iCloud). Large recordings can take a moment, and a device that is offline will catch up once it reconnects. You can also open the manan folder in the Files app to see what has arrived.
I edited the same note on two devices and got a choice of versions.
When a note changes on two devices while one is offline, manan asks which version to keep rather than silently overwriting either. If remote changes arrive while you are typing, your version is kept and the other is saved as a copy beside it.
I deleted a note by mistake.
Deleted notes and projects wait in the Trash for 30 days. Open Settings → Trash to restore them.
Voice notes
How do I record a voice note?
Tap the microphone button next to the new-note button, use the Voice Note widget, the Action Button, Siri or Shortcuts, or choose File → New Voice Note on the Mac. The recording is saved in a “Voice Notes” project, which manan creates again if you ever delete it.
There's no transcript on my voice note.
Transcription runs on your device, so it needs a supported language and, on first use, a short download of Apple’s speech model. If it isn’t available, the recording is still saved with its player and you can type notes beneath it. Check that Speech Recognition is allowed for manan in Settings.
manan can't record.
Allow the microphone for manan in Settings → manan (iOS) or System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone (Mac).
Apple Watch, widgets and the Action Button
My Apple Watch recording hasn't shown up on my iPhone.
After you stop recording, the Watch confirms “Saved” straight away and sends the recording to your iPhone in the background. Keep the iPhone nearby and open manan on it once; the note is created as soon as the app is active. Make sure the Watch app is installed from the Watch app on your iPhone (My Watch → Available Apps).
How do I start a voice note from the Action Button?
On iPhone, Settings → Action Button → Shortcut, then choose New Voice Note from manan. On Apple Watch Ultra, Settings → Action Button → App, then manan.
How do I add the widgets?
Press and hold the Home Screen or Lock Screen (iPhone, iPad), the desktop (Mac) or the watch face, choose Edit or Add Widget, and search for manan. The widgets follow the theme you choose in Settings.
Writing, sharing and more
How do I share or export a note?
Open the … menu in a note: share the note or its recordings, save to Files, copy as plain text, or export as a Word document or PDF. Shared notes include their recordings as audio files.
Where can I see when a note was created or changed?
Open the … menu in a note and choose Note Info (on the Mac, press ⌥⌘I).
How do I change the look of a project's icon?
Open the project and tap the small pencil on its icon to choose a color and symbol.
